After the holidays, getting back into a wellness routine can be a challenge. BSA Registered Dietitian, Stephanie Collins, says holiday foods and events can knock us out of our healthy routines.
“After you indulge during the holidays, the cravings for high fat, sugar and salt are strong and it can be hard to resist,” said Collins.
Collins recommends skipping the diet and aiming toward maintaining healthy habits.
“Diets are only short-term fixes,” Collins explained. “Educating yourself on portion control and being consistent with exercise is the best way to loose and maintain a healthy weight.”
According to Collins, following the tips below can help you get you back on track of your health routine and feeling your best.
Write down your goals and review them periodically
Set achievable goals. Connect a goal with a meaningful outcome for you.
Stay hydrated
Replace the holiday calories with water. Strive for at least 64 ounces of water every day.
Load up on vegetables
Increase your vegetable intake. Vegetables are high in fiber and nutrients and help keep you full, while being low in calories.
Focus on portion control
Allow yourself to eat all foods, but in the right amount. Routine eating and correct portions can lead to successful weight loss. Self-assess your hunger before you start eating meals. Be mindful of the amount you need versus what you want.
Get moving
Regular physical activity is important for good health, and it’s especially important if you’re trying to lose weight or maintain a healthy weight. Set aside specific times for physical activity in your schedule to make it part of your daily or weekly routine.
Lean on your support system
Collins recommends reaching out for support and resources to maximize your efforts and success.
“Try activities with friends or family members to help with motivation and mutual encouragements,” Collins said.
“If you know it has been a struggle in the past to ‘get back on track,’ I recommend seeking accountability with a friend or family member, or even seeing a Registered Dietitian every month to help keep you on track.”
